Sporting Clays Five Stand:
Since there is no duck hunting after lunch, duck hunters should know that we offer five stand sporting clay shooting on Saturday afternoons should you want to play. If so, you might want to bring an upland or sporting clay shotgun as well as some lead shot shells.
Deposits:
A deposit of $400.00 per person is required for any of these hunts, bookings will only be confirmed when the deposit is received. These deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable and only good for the specific dates booked.
Ala carte buck trophy fees:
Subject to deer season being open and managed land buck permits available, on any duck hunt, a management buck -defined as eight points or less - can be taken for a trophy fee of $750.00; a trophy buck - defined here as a buck nine points or greater - can be taken for a trophy fee of $3,500.00. Since we don't hunt ducks in the afternoon, such a buck hunt may be of interest.
WILD BOAR

There are no limits on hogs. Because hogs have odd hours, to allow you to be in your stand when they are moving, so are our mealtimes. Generally, our breakfasts will be ~ 9 AM, "supper" ~ 3 - 4 PM. As the time and amount of daylight changes as the year goes on, so will the mealtimes. Definite mealtimes will be posted on the front door of the lodge on your arrival.
In 2019, the laws were changed in Texas: it is no longer a requirement to have a Texas hunting license to hunt hogs in Texas; however, a small game license is still required if the hunter wishes to take any varmints or other non-game animals such as coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, mountain lions, etc.
About 90% of our 55 hog feeders/stands have solar lights on them to illuminate under the feeders. These lights run year round so that the hogs will be used to them. Although we have bought what we consider the best solar feeder lights on the market (Sniper Hog Light's Exterminator), the technology is such that they remain unreliable. If we have several overcast days prior to your hunt, there is a substantial chance that the battery powering the light will not charge and that the light will go dark at or shortly after sundown. Therefore, we strongly advise hog hunters have lights on their guns or night vision scopes - thermal or infrared, as most of our hogs will come to the feeders after dark. If you have no nocturnal hunting equipment, we do sell the Sniper Hog Light 66LRX rifle mounted red or green light for night hunting on site.

PREMIER HUNT THE RUT PACKAGE:
This package will be available from Monday October 24 to Sunday November 13, 2022, or the last two weeks of January. The Premier Hunt the Rut Package can be booked outside of these dates, but the dates above will be reserved for primarily for buck hunters. The weekend buck hunting packages can also be booked anytime during the open season, but obviously the hunter is more likely to be successful during the rut.
Hunt The Rut Package
A hunter purchasing Hunt the Rut package will be entitled to 1 buck (trophy fees and fines will apply – see below) and 1 doe and will be entitled to 2 full weeks of hunting, meals, (being served from Wednesday evenings through Sunday mornings, no meals are served Sunday noon through Wednesday noon), lodging, care of game animals, and transportation to and from hunt areas. Lodging after the initial hunt can be arranged on space available basis.
The base fee for this Hunt the Rut package is $3,350.00 with a trophy fee for a buck 4 ½ years or older of $450.00. A buck 3 ½ years or younger will have a trophy fee of $1,450.00. Because of past seasons' numerous fruitless searches for bucks hunters were certain they had hit, there will be a $250.00 fee assessed for drawing blood plus the $450.00 trophy fee, as even 1 drop of blood constitutes the harvesting of that buck, and your buck hunt is over. If no blood is found after a concentrated search, missing will result in a $250.00 fee, but hunter may continue to buck hunt; and, in the event of a miss, if a buck is taken later, the hunter will have to pay the appropriate trophy fee in addition to the miss fee already assessed. In past years far too many long shots with deer reportedly going down occurred without any blood being found. Fees for shooting underage does, button bucks, and immature bucks will also apply to all Hunt the Rut packages. (see details under our doe package section)

Background info: The "reverse" trophy fees detailed above were instituted because of poor hunter target selection. The number of 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old ten points harvested in the past have been appalling. Having achieved parity on our deer herd sex ratios, having planted and heavily fertilized a stupendous number of food plots, as managers, we have done all we can to produce a herd of trophy deer; The BigWoods will never reach the goal of producing East Texas 200 class B&C deer on a regular basis unless we get some management help from our hunters. If generations of 2 and 3 year old bucks are lost every year, deer of this size will never happen. Also, because of these considerations, The BigWoods no longer offers "ala carte" buck hunts, but rather our offering is restricted to the Hunt the Rut package. We shall keep a close eye on our hunters, anticipating a "culling" of individual hunters if their performance does not improve. We are looking to develop a long term relationship with our returning hunters so that the big young buck you let walk this year will be next year's trophy of a lifetime.

In past seasons we have had a terrible carnage inflicted on our young bucks by our doe hunters. This had to stop. As a result, we have increased the penalties spelled out above for such mistakes. Although these doe hunts are often an entry level hunt for young hunters, it is appropriate that they learn the rules of the game and to identify deer properly from the get go; teaching this is the responsibility of their mentor.
Licenses:
Hunters will need a valid Texas hunting license; however, they will use BigWoods managed deer permits and will not need to use their personal tags.
Also, hunters, both in and out of state, born after September 1, 1971 will need to show evidence of having completed a hunter safety course.
Liability release:
All hunters and guests must sign a liability release prior to going afield. This can be done on arrival, but it will speed your check-in to do it ahead of time online. If you wish to do so, click the link below.
