The Premier Hunt the Rut Package can be booked outside of these dates, but the dates above will be reserved for buck hunters only with no doe, duck or hog hunters on the property during these days. The weekend buck hunting packages can be booked anytime during the open season, but obviously the hunter is more likely to be successful during the rut.

Hunt The Rut Package

A hunter purchasing Hunt the Rut package will be entitled to 1 buck (trophy fees and fines will apply – see below) and 1 doe and will be entitled to 2 full weeks of hunting, meals, (being served from Wednesday evenings through Sunday mornings, no meals are served Sunday noon through Wednesday noon), lodging, care of game animals, and transportation to and from hunt areas. Lodging after the initial hunt can be arranged on space available basis.

The base fee for this Hunt the Rut package is $2950.00 with a trophy fee for a buck 4 ½ years or older of $350.00. A buck 3 ½ years or younger will have a trophy fee of $1450.00. Because of past season’s numerous fruitless searches for bucks hunters were certain they had hit, there will be a $250.00 fee assessed for drawing blood plus the $350.00 trophy fee, as even 1 drop of blood constitutes the harvesting of that buck, and your buck hunt is over. If no blood is found after a concentrated search, missing will result in a $250.00 fee, but hunter may continue to buck hunt; and, in the event of a miss, if a buck is taken later, the hunter will have to pay the appropriate trophy fee in addition to the miss fee already assessed. In past years far too many long shots with deer reportedly going down occurred without any blood being found. Fees for shooting underage does, button bucks, and immature bucks will also apply to all Hunt the Rut packages.(see details under our doe package section)

WEEKEND BUCK HUNTING PACKAGES:

Background info: The "reverse" trophy fees detailed above were instituted because of poor hunter target selection. The number of 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old ten points harvested last year was appalling. Having achieved parity on our deer herd sex ratios, having planted and heavily fertilized a stupendous number of food plots, as managers, we have done all we can to produce a herd of trophy deer; The BigWoods will never reach the goal of producing East Texas 200 class B&C deer on a regular basis unless we get some management help from our hunters. If generations of 2 and 3 year old bucks are lost every year, deer of this size will never happen. Also, because of these considerations, The BigWoods no longer offers "ala carte" buck hunts, but rather our offering is restricted to the Hunt the Rut package. We shall keep a close eye on our hunters, anticipating a "culling" of individual hunters if their performance does not improve. We are looking to develop a long term relationship with our returning hunters so that the big young buck you let walk this year will be next year's trophy of a lifetime.

Weekend bow hunts:

These run Friday noon - Sunday noon for $500.00.  The following trophy fees or fines will apply:

  • A buck 10 points or greater: $1,500.00

  • A buck 9 points: $750.00.

  • A buck 8 points or less: $350.00.

  • Young buck penalty for taking a buck 9 points or greater less than 4 1/2 years old: $750.00

DOE HUNTS:

Parent/Child Doe Hunts:  This hunt package offers a 2 day doe hunt featuring a noon-noon Friday – Sunday hunt schedule and includes unlimited does, lodging, meals, transportation to and from hunt areas, and care of game animals. Hunt package price is $925, and an additional child may be added for $425. At The BigWoods, for these purposes, a child is defined as 15 years old or younger. (See details concerning under aged does, button bucks, spike bucks, and multi pointed bucks below.)

Single Adult Doe Hunt: This hunt package offers a 2 day hunt featuring a Friday – Sunday hunt schedule and includes unlimited does, lodging, meals, transportation to and from hunt areas, and care of game animals. Hunt package price is $725.00. (See details concerning under aged does, button, bucks, spike bucks, and multi pointed bucks below.)

The BigWoods record for a 2 day doe hunt is 23 does.

For all doe hunts, the rules and fines listed below will be strictly enforced, after all, this is supposed to be a mature doe hunt, so the following fees will be charged for specific mistakes by the hunter.

Button Bucks  $395.00/animal

Does under 65 lbs.  $155.00/animal

Spikes with antlers 2” or more    $425.00/animal

Fork horn or larger racks      $3500.00/animal

In past seasons we have had a terrible carnage inflicted on our young bucks by our doe hunters. This had to stop. As a result, we have increased the penalties spelled out above for such mistakes. Although these doe hunts are often an entry level hunt for young hunters, it is appropriate that they learn the rules of the game and to identify deer properly from the get go; teaching this is the responsibility of their mentor.

Licenses:

Hunters will need a valid Texas hunting license; however, they will use BigWoods managed deer permits and will not need to use their personal tags.

Also, hunters, both in and out of state, born after September 1, 1971 will need to show evidence of having completed a hunter safety course.
